Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone [E959] is a sweetener belonging to the flavonoid glycoside group with a sweetness effect more than 400 times greater than sucrose. Neohesperidin is found naturally in bitter oranges, bitter grapefruit and the peel and flesh of other citrus fruits.

The sweetness of neohesperidine evokes a cooling sensation on the tongue and leaves a sweet feeling in the mouth for a long time. The sweetener is heat-resistant and has a stable pH. It can be used in beverages and milk drinks, chewing gum, candies, ice cream, sauces, instant coffee and some pharmaceutical products. As a zero calorie sweetener, it can also be used by diabetics.

Neohesperidin can be used both as a sweetener (in doses of 20-30 mg/L) and as a flavour enhancer (in doses of 4-5 mg/L).

The recommended maximum daily intake (ADI) is 5 mg/kg body weight.
